The new year has come and many bloggers are setting goals to make more money from their blogs this year. However, there are a lot of bloggers who are still struggling to find ways to monetize their blogging efforts. So here is a list of things that might be stopping you from making the money you want:

Your Niche Isn’t Specific Enough

Having a specific niche is one of the most important things when it comes to making money. The more specific and targeted your blog is, the more appealing it will be to advertisers. It will also make it much easier to make money from other methods such as affiliate sales and the sale of your own products.

So take a step back from your blog and ask yourself, is my niche specific enough? If not, it is never to late to refocus your...

If not, it is never to late to refocus your blog on a more specific topic. It’s better to do it now than later on.

Your Niche Isn’t Popular

Another problem is having a popular blog in a non-popular niche. You might be the most popular blog in your niche, but if only a handful of readers are interested it will not help you much. The key is to do some research and find out how big of target your niche is. How many people are searching for the topics you are covering.

You might want to take a look around and find other blogs within your niche. See what type of traffic numbers they are getting and find out if they are having problems monetizing their blog.

Your Blog Is Not One Of The Main Blogs In It’s Niche

When it comes to your niche, it is very important to be one of the key blogs. Depending on the niche, there could easily be thousands of blogs covering the same topics as your blog. This can make it very difficult to monetize your site, especially if your blog is not one of the more popular blogs.

So take a look at some of the major blogs in your niche and take note of their traffic ranking, PageRank, and search engine rankings. Then make a plan to work on your blog and make it just as good, if not better than your competors.

Your Traffic Numbers Are Not High Enough

When it comes to making money from advertisements, traffic is key. You need to have a faily large amound of visitors to make your blog more attractive to advertisers. If your only getting a few hits a day, it is very unlikely that someone would want to spend money advertising on your blog.

So make a plan to increase your traffic. Start leavin comments on other blogs, submit articles to various directories, and swap links with fellow bloggers. Make a game plan and stick to it. Increasing traffic might be difficult, but it is anywhere from impossible.

You’re Putting All Your Eggs In One Basket

Another mistake a lot of bloggers make is putting all of their eggs in one basket. What I mean by this is utilizing one form of monetization and depending on it for all of their income. Instead, focus on using a variety of monetization methods and adding up the totals to equal your overall income.

A lot of bloggers focus on one ad network, such as Google Adsense. This is okay to start, but eventually you need to branch out and try different techniques. Start using other methods such as affiliate links to help increase your blogs potential.

You can also focus on creating a product of your own to sell. This is a great way to make money from your blog and can make much more money than simply relying on ad clicks.

Create A Game Plan

Now that you know a few reasons why you might not be making money, create a game plan for your blog. Create a list of things you need to do and follow through. With a little work and determination, you can start to see the results you are looking for.

I question I often get asked is do I blog for the fun or money? This is a great question to ask yourself because it can change the way you approach blogging. There are some big differences between those that blog solely for money, and those that do it for fun.

If You Blog For Money

Then your main concern is generating income. You place tons of advertisements on your site and promote a lot of products in hopes of making some commissions. This works for many bloggers and one way of approaching the blogosphere.

However, the downside to this is many bloggers focus more on the monetization instead of their readers. This can make your blog less likely to become popular and will make it much more difficult to generate a large amount of traffic.

If You Blog For Fun

Lets face it, the majority of bloggers are doing it for the fun. A lot of people setup free blogs on blogger and start writing about their life, adventures, and anything else they want to share. The thought of making money from it never crosses their mind. There are no advertisements, and no affiliate promotions.

This is exactly how I was when I started blogging. I focused a lot more on writing and promoting my blog than I did with the monetization of it. So this is a great way to start out and learn the basics of blogging. The downside to those that blog for fun, is that they will not make money until they shift their approach.

The Best Of Both Worlds

Personally, I think the best possible way to blog is by combing these two different approaches. Blogging should be fun AND make you money. If you are not having fun, you will surely lose interest along the way because it is a long and winding journey. Making money along the way however, can keep you motivated to keep trying.

So I recommend blogging for fun, as well as money. This is the best way to become successful.
