WordPress Version 2.8.5 Released

If you haven’t done so yet, make sure to upgrade your WordPress installation(s) to version 2.8.5. The latest version was released yesterday and has a handful of security fixes. A few worth noting from the WordPress development blog include:

A fix for the Trackback Denial-of-Service attack that is currently being seen.
Removal of areas within the code where php code in variables was evaluated.
Switched the file upload functionality to be whitelisted for all users including Admins.
Retiring of the two importers of Tag data from old plugins.

As always, it’s important to upgrade as soon as possible to give yourself the best protection against attacks and hackers. So make it a goal today to get all of your blogs/websites upgraded to the newest version!

Need Help With WordPress?

If you haven’t checked out our WordPress tutorials yet, you’ll notice that we’ve created a bunch of video tutorials to help you with WordPress. The topics we covered include topics like themes, monetization, and plugins. We’re currently adding as many videos as we can to our collection and hope to continue in this manner.

However, we are currently on the lookout for suggestions as to what we should cover in our videos. Are there any things that you struggle with when it comes to WordPress? Do you have a certain plugin that you can’t seem to figure out? Perhaps you’ve downloaded a theme but cannot get it to work?

Regardless of what the problem is, we want to hear from you. So please leave any suggestions or questions you have as a comment on this post. We will then try our best to create a high quality video that answers your question (or solves your problem).

WordPress 2.8.3 Security Release

If you haven’t done so yet, we highly recommend upgrading to version 2.8.3 of WordPress. It’s a security release, which will fix some security issues from the previous version.

We’ve done the upgrade on all of our blogs without any issues, so it appears to be stable.

WordPress 2.8.1 Released

Have you noticed the yellow upgrade bar in your WordPress dashboard? If not, version 2.8.1 was officially released yesterday and it includes a few bug fixes as well as some changed to make it more secure.

Here’s a few things version 2.8.1 fixes:

Certain themes were calling get_categories() in such a way that it would fail in 2.8. 2.8.1 works around this so these themes won’t have to change.
Dashboard memory usage is reduced. Some people were running out of memory when loading the dashboard, resulting in an incomplete page.
The automatic upgrade no longer accidentally deletes files when cleaning up from a failed upgrade.
A problem where the rich text editor wasn’t being loaded due to compression issues has been worked around.
Extra security has been put in place to better protect you from plugins that do not do explicit permission checks.
Translation of role names fixed.

The problem in bold was something a lot of our clients were experiencing. Luckily this version resolves any problems with the rich text editor. For a list of all the fixes included in this version, check out this post over on the WordPress.org blog.

If you haven’t yet, we highly recommend upgrading right away to be on the safe side. We’ve already upgraded our blogs and haven’t experienced any problems.

What’s New In WordPress 2.8?

A little over a week ago, WordPress publicly released version 2.8 of their blogging platform. They managed to fix over 700 bugs so If you haven’t upgraded yet, we highly encourage you to do so. After upgrading, you might not notice anything different in this version. However, there are a few changes that make 2.8 worth upgrading to.

Our Favorite Changes

Here is a quick breakdown of our favorite new features included in WordPress 2.8:

Drag and Drop Widgets

We really, really like the new drag and drop widgets. It makes it so much easier to manage your sidebars. It’s really nice to not have to choose the different sidebars from the dropdown list like in previous versions of WordPress. So using themes with multiple sidebars is much less of a hassle now. Woo hoo!

Syntax Highlighting

For coders, the new syntax highlighting is a big change. It now lets us view the code in a way we are used to seeing with desktop applications like Dreamweaver. You can also jump to certain functions using the dropdown menu. This makes editing your files much easier form with WordPress. This was the first thing we noticed after doing the upgrade.

Add Themes From Within The Dashboard

We really like the fact that you can now add themes from directly in the WordPress dashboard. It makes it easier to add themes since you no longer need to upload them via FTP.
